A: Being a “Nerd” is neither a good thing nor a bad thing – it’s just something some people call themselves to signify that they may have a higher-than-average interest in a particular thing, like anime or comics or video games. (In reality, everyone’s a Nerd for something – cooking, football, golf, houseplants – whatever it is that you get super excited about.)

A “Blerd” is simply a Black Nerd. Some may ask why we choose to add a racial descriptor to the term Nerd. For many of us, calling ourselves Blerds is a way to distinguish ourselves from those Nerds that tend to have an issue when a particular character – a mermaid, a stormtrooper, a spider-bitten teenager – appears differently than they did before.

A: BLERDFEST!, The Gulf Coast’s First & Only Black Nerd Festival, is about representation, education, and inclusion. It is for us, by us, about us. To be clear: if you were to host a birthday party that was for you, by you, and about you, that wouldn’t mean that your friends weren’t invited, right?

We are dedicated to creating a safe space in which to celebrate Blerd culture, to promoting the pursuit of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math) to our community’s youth, to showcasing Black professionals in Blerdy fields, and to creating events that educate, encourage, enrich, and entertain all members of our community.
We are to many Cons what PBS is to Home Shopping Network.

We had our first event in 2019; COVID deferred our ’20, ’21, and ’22 dreams, but we’ve been coming back each year since 2023 – BIGGER! BETTER! BLACKER!

A: No. Similar to the way that there are many Cons that focus on Japanese art & culture – that anyone can attend – BLERDFEST! is primarily focused on the recognition, representation, and respect of Blackness in Nerd culture, and is open to anyone who supports that mission.

A: We would love BLERDFEST! to be a multi-day event; until we have the resources to make that happen, it is a 1-day event that will take place:

Saturday, June 6, 11 am – 6 pm
McDonogh 35 College Preparatory High School
4000 Roneagle Way (formerly Cadillac St)
NOLA 70112

To create a multi-day experience, we started what we call the ALL-BLERD WEEKEND in 2025, in which we partnered with other Blerdy groups to co-present events from the Friday night before, until the Sunday night after BLERDFEST!

It included a BLERDLESQUE Show, an AFTER PARTY, BLACK FAE DAY, and ANIME SUNDAY.
